One of my favorite websites to search for odd spots to check out during my trips is atlasobscura.com. While wandering around Borough Market I had some extra time before our group met back up so I did a lil search and came across the Crossbones Graveyard. Luckily for me it was right around the corner. This dramatic history of this burial site is extensive and melancholy. Check the links below for all the sordid details…
“On Redcross Way, a quiet back-street running parallel to Borough High Street, is a plot of land surrounded by London Underground hoardings. The large rusty iron gates are adorned with ivy, ribbons, flowers, feathers, jewellery and other curious totems – and a bronze plaque bearing the epitaph: ‘R.I.P. The Outcast Dead’.
This is Cross Bones, a pauper’s burial ground with a legend stretching back to medieval times.” via crossbones.org.uk
For full history check out crossbones.org.uk and wikipedia.org and there is an interesting cold case show about one of the bodies they unearthed during construction.. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3idsg8
