This former Cistercian monastery in Riddagshausen (part of Braunschweig) was settled in 1145 by Monks and endowed by Henry the Lion in 1146. The whole neighborhood of Riddagshausen is just adorable. When I visited the Abbey the first time I was blown away with how beautiful and peaceful it all was. The architecture of the church and the headstones, the peaceful grounds spotted with apple trees and veggie/herb gardens make it a perfect place to sit quietly and enjoy. I wanted to make another visit to see how it looks in the springtime.
The site is now basically a nature/bird preserve and is listed as a special protected area. The surviving buildings include the abbey church and the gate house, now home of the Cistercian Museum.
