My favorite way to explore new places is with a local. They know all the ins and outs, best spots to hit and how to hit them. Our Michigan friend took us on our very first UP adventure! All this time I thought Michigan was the “mitten” so when she started talking about the UP or Upper Peninsula I was a bit confused. Public schooling… ammiright?
The UP aka Upper Peninsula aka Upper Michigan has a style all it’s own and I love it. The natives call themselves Yoopers. (U.P., YOO-P… get it? It took me a minute.) They have their own unique language and foods, with the pasty being the thing they are best known for. You’ll find them in pasty shops and just about every food store. The pasties in the UP are pronounced ‘PASS- tees’ and they are basically small pie crust filled with meat, potatoes, onions and spices.
We decided to rent a pontoon boat to check out Pictured Rocks and really there’s no other way you should do it. Simply gorgeous! The water was so crystal clear Peter kept thinking we were going to hit these big rocks under the water but they were super far down. Just plain stinking gorgeous.
We only spent a few days on this trip so I am stoked to head back after the winter weather is done with it’s madness.
