Located in the Austrian state of Burgenland, right along the Hungarian border, Deutsch Schützen is a delightful “small” town. It houses approximately 400 residents. Deutsch Schützen literally translated means German Protect and I was told by locals, while drinking homemade schnapps, that this town was settled by people who were given land under the promise to protect the area from Marauders. The hills surrounding the few roads of houses are lined with vineyards, which makes this a hot spot for wine enthusiasts in the spring and summer but we happened to be there in winter sooo… we saw lots of snow, spent time by the wood burning stove, chatted up the locals, ate and drank local goodies and played games.
Here’s a great blog on the area written with love by Birgit Platschka who I had the pleasure of spending time with while we were there. http://www.simplyburgenland.blogspot.de/
