I had an afternoon free from all those pesky work things so I decided to take a hike in the Harz Mountains. My GPS pointed towards the town of Schierke and avoid interstates was checked so I could enjoy the scenic route. Sunny summer day, driving from small town to small town on two-way roads, I came across a road closed sign so the detour began. I was on a different path but the GPS quickly rerouted. On one of these roads I passed a monument to the collapse of the wall in 1989, Grenzdenkmal Hessendamm.
It’s essentially a little info booth with photos from that day and remnants of the border fence from the days when there was an East and West Germany. On what was the East side of the fence there still stands a border tower where the GDR guards would keep an eye out.
Another great spot found while essentially lost.
